Regulation and compliance
We protect the sustainability of Victoria's primary and energy industries by regulating natural resource use in the interest of all Victorians.
The department's role is to encourage best practice behaviours through a proactive approach to self-regulation - while providing education, inspection and enforcement services to ensure industry and community compliance with legislation and regulations.
We also protect the quality and safety of primary products by building and maintaining Victoria's capability to monitor, detect and respond to disease, pest and residue incidents, outbreaks and other biosecurity threats.
Some of our regulation and compliance work includes:
Enforcement
We hold a primary responsibility for administering legislation governing agriculture, animal welfare, fisheries, and energy and earth resources. Read our enforcement page for information, including definitions and principles.
Fees and charges
Fees for services and regulatory purposes, including licensing and registering certain activities, and information about fines for improper conduct are available on our Fees and charges page.
Freedom of Information
The Freedom of Information Act 1982 (FOI Act) gives people the right to request access to documents held by us. Read about freedom of information.
Major DPI Acts
A list and brief description of our Major Acts is available. For access to Victorian Principal Public Acts and Principal Statutory Rules, and all 1996 and 1997 Victorian Acts and Statutory Rules to date, see the Department of Premier and Cabinet Victorian Statute Book. See also Victorian Law Today.
Privacy
We value and protect all personal information collected in the course of undertaking our responsibilities and always demonstrate a strong culture of protecting the confidentiality and privacy of individuals and clients.
Regulatory reform
We play a role in regulatory reform through consultation with stakeholders and the public about potential burdens that may arise from new or amended regulations. We are also committed to Reducing the Regulatory Burden.
Tenders and contracts
We publish details of all publicly advertised Tenders and Expressions of Interest on the Victorian Government Tenders website including all Tender documentation and details of Tender briefings. You'll also find details of Tenders for all departments within the Victorian Government - this is an important information source for suppliers and providers wishing to do business with the State Government of Victoria.
Whistleblowers protection
We take all reasonable steps to protect people (known as whistleblowers) who come forward with a disclosure about improper conduct by public bodies or public sector employees. Read about the Whistleblowers Protection Act and what improper conduct means.
