Media release: Reduced Pipi catch limit starts next week
Friday, May 15, 2009
The reduced daily catch limit for pipis within Cape Liptrap Coastal Park begins next week, Monday 25 May, 2009.
The new daily per person limit will be 2 litres, with shells or half a litre without shells and will only apply between Point Smythe and Arch Rock, including Venus Bay.
The previous pipi catch limit of 5 litres with shells or 1 litre without shells, remains in place elsewhere in Victoria.
The Acting Executive Director of Fisheries Victoria, Anthony Hurst says signs will be erected at beach access points, to raise awareness of the change and flyers will be widely distributed to by Fisheries Officers.
Mr Hurst reminded fishers they must possess a Recreational Fishing Licence, unless exempt, to collect pipis and may only use their hands or feet to do so.
Fishers must not use tools of any size or shape to collect pipis.
“Members of the public who see or suspect illegal fishing activity should call the 24-hour reporting line 13-FISH (13-3474).”
