Sustainable practice change
We facilitate the adoption of new ideas and practices, and assist industries and communities to understand, manage and adapt to change - change that is generally driven by economic, social and environmental pressures.
We also promote trade by enhancing access to markets and securing market opportunities for Victoria.
Our research, development and practice change efforts provide a strong foundation for the future of farming in Victoria. We encourage good farm management practices that deliver significant private and public benefits.
Practice change activities
Some of our recent activities include:
- A Future Farming strategy to address the main economic, environmental and social challenges and opportunities facing our farm sector and rural communities.
- A wide range of extension and regulatory services to drive practice change in the farm sector, including the effective delivery and coordination of drought assistance to affected businesses and communities.
- Through participation on the Primary Industries Ministerial Council (PIMC), we led the national reform agenda to build capability in agriculture, fisheries and forestry for research, development and practice change. We achieved unprecedented collaboration and PIMC endorsement of a national research, development and practice change framework.
- A BeefCheque farmer training program to raise productivity and sustainability in livestock production. In 2007-08, 94 per cent of 32 participants reported practice change in the key profit areas of pasture, feed and business management as a result of the program.
- A major research, development and practice change program to survey and disseminate information on Victoria's earth resources.
- Complementing our research, development and practice change reforms, significant progress has been made to establish a Biosciences Research Centre - a joint venture with La Trobe University.
