Energy in Victoria
We use energy every day. It's essential for running our businesses, our economy and our lives.
While the energy sector is now privately owned, the Victorian Government aims to ensure all consumers have access to essential energy services. We invest in the development of innovative energy technologies. We build and support the energy industry through policy development and regulation. We also help Victorians manage their own energy use.
Geological Carbon Storage Exploration Tender
On 30 October 2009 the Victorian Government opened applications for exploration permits to explore for storage formations suitable for geological carbon storage in two areas within Victoria’s Gippsland Basin.
Smart Meters
Over the next four years about 2.5 million Victorian electricity meters will be replaced by Smart Meters, allowing consumers to better manage their energy use.
Feed-in tariffs
Feed-in tariffs help ensure households are paid a fair price for any renewable power that is fed into the electricity grid.
Carbon Storage Regulations
Submissions have been received on the onshore carbon storage draft regulations.
Energy Technology Innovation Strategy (ETIS)
ETIS aims to accelerate the development of new clean energy technologies so they can become commercially ready more quickly.
Clean coal - near zero emissions
Clean coal or carbon capture and storage offers potential for deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions and may effectively bring emissions to near zero.
