Forestry in Victoria
Forestry is an important part of the social and economic fabric of Victoria providing jobs, income and products derived from a natural, sustainable and renewable resource.
We work with commercial forest industries to maximise economic value from production and processing of timber (plantations and native forests on public and private land) in a socially and environmentally sustainable manner, and assist industry to adapt to environmental, social and economic change.
We also work with landholders to facilitate forestry into rural properties, with a particular focus on farm forestry, plantation biosecurity and forestry climate change impacts.
Timber Industry Strategy
A new Timber Industry Strategy public consultation draft has been developed to provide a framework and long-term direction for the Victorian timber industry for the next 20 years. It will help ensure we maintain a viable and sustainable timber industry.
Farm forestry
Farm forestry is forestry practiced by farmers, integrated into farming systems. Activities are often commercial in focus but can provide a range of non-timber benefits. We are developing a Farm Forestry Plan to facilitate growth and sustainability in the industry.
Forestry and climate change
The growth and sustainable management of trees and forests is increasingly being recognised as an important mechanism in tackling climate change. The Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme will present new market opportunities for forestry.
Plantation biosecurity
Forestry biosecurity outbreaks can have significant implications for the environment and market access for forest products. We help landholders take an active and informed role to ensure the ongoing health of their plantations.
